Imagina Convention 2024
21/11/24

Hi! This is going to be my first official blog! I’m writing this a few days after the 2024 Imagina Convention in Oaxaca City, because I want to tell you all about what I did and what I bought!
I arrived at the event at 12, and walked around for about half an hour. The main stage had a cosplay contest for children, and let me tell you, all the costumes were super cute! I was so happy to see parents supporting their kid’s interests and having fun alongside them. I think the winner was a nine-year-old girl dressed up as Maleficent, though by that time I was too busy looking at the Pókemon TCG stand. They had all these beautiful cards, and I wanted to see if any of them were of our favorite Pokémon. Alas, we were unlucky. While I could find both Joltik and Galvantula cards, I didn’t really like the art that much, and all the cards with nice full art were way more expensive than the regular ones.
DnD and a Meal
After our day’s first disappointment, I went looking for the secondary stage, and the main reason we were there in the first place: Tabletop Role-playing Games! We have always wanted to get into it, but it's hard when you live in a small city such as this one. I was so excited to see this particular event advertised, but as it turns out, I was the only person in the convention nerdy enough to care. It was a little bit sad, being the only player, but I still had a lot of fun. The DM was very kind and patient, and explained all the game mechanics as succinctly as you could possibly get with a game like Dungeons and Dragons. I decided to play a Tiefling Bard because of the charisma bonus, and because I thought it’d be a fun character to play. I named him Micho, because he was born thin as a kitten, though that’s a bit of lore I came up with later. At the time, I just thought it was funny.
Micho’s story began at the palace of a local nobleman. He was terribly ill, you see, and Micho was sent on a deathly quest to find a cure. Now, the thing about Micho is that he is clumsy, and a bit of a coward. He is a good enough bard, but that doesn’t really pay well. And so, he finds himself having to do quests to earn a living. He’s willing to do anything, if that keeps him properly fed and clothed.
He walks up to the forest and finds this girl, Kiki. She’s on a quest, too, to find the magic sap that will heal her mother. Well, how convenient! We ventured together across the forest, we found a very violent tree, and after an intense round of combat (and I mean intense! We almost died!) we gave a dramatic death to the dungeon boss. Unfortunately, Micho’s vial had been destroyed during battle, and his newfound attachment to Kiki was in conflict with his need to survive. He seriously considered stealing her bottle, but thank the gods, she happened to have another one at hand.
After that, we parted ways. Micho came back to the nobleman’s palace, and he was so pleased with his performance, he decided to sponsor him long term! A happy ending for everyone involved, really, how much more could you ask for?
I talked to the DM a bit after that. The campaign was wonderful, simple, but very effective, and I found myself smiling and giggling all the way. He picked up his stuff and handed over the contact information for his DnD group before I went away to get myself something to eat. Those bits about Micho starving were really just projection on my part, because brother, was I hungry. I ordered a Poképizza (A pizza shaped like a Pokéball!) and it was surprisingly good. Then, with my tummy full, I returned to the convention.
Arguably, The Best Moment of my Entire Life
And I bought things. Of course, I bought things! It is not often that I am allowed to indulge without worrying about money, or about what other people will think. My mom gave me some good money, and she told me I could spend it however I wanted. Ben, of course, wasn’t all too thrilled about this, and while he tried his best not to judge me for my purchases, he was still anxious. After all, what if we bought something, but then later saw something we liked even better, but didn’t have any money left to buy?
No time to think about that, though, because holy crap, is that a snake?
It was, indeed, a snake. I swear, getting to hold this wonderful animal was the highlight of my day. I was delighted. A baby reticulated python, resting in my very hands. Or, well, hands, arms and neck. It was one long noodle, that one, though not nearly as long as the adults usually get.
Closure
Unfortunately, Ben’s fears came true. By the time mom had come to pick us up, there was a single thing I still wanted to buy: a Gravity Falls necklace. I was just a few pesos away from being able to get it, and it was very tragic because I loved how nice it looked! We had to leave it, in the end, even if I really wanted to try to steal it. Nothing is illegal if you don't get caught.
At least, that’s what I had thought. Turns out, we did have enough money all along! The next day I checked our bag, and there was a stray bill laying at the bottom of it. I was so distressed about this, I almost had a meltdown. Thinking about it still hurts, as I am writing this. I am going to dig online, see if I can order a necklace that looks anything like the one I saw back at the convention.
At last, we came home. I took this picture of myself, with my newly acquired kitty ears, my cat would not stop staring at. We watched the new episodes of Arcane season 2 with our mom, and then went to sleep.
Anyway, that was our little adventure at the Imagina Anime Con! It’s always great to gather with the local freaks to celebrate our freaky interests. It was a great day for me, and one I’m going to cherish for a long time. If anyone is reading this, I hope you enjoyed it! Blogging is new for me, I’ve never really tried it before, and it’s going to be a while before I get the hang of it. That’s it for now! Have a nice day, and don’t forget to kiss your pets!
